Ordinary people and landscapes are intriguing to me. I look closely, sketch quickly, and ask the subject to show me something. As paint joins the conversation I may capture the scene’s most exuberant features: lights and darks; strong colors; obvious shapes; busy intersections; palpable textures. Or, I wait...and wait..and the quiet elements emerge: subtle colors; negative spaces; unexpected stories; imagined intersections; whispered prayers. I listen and paint and thank God for drawing me toward beauty and brokenness; whimsy and longing.
"At the back of our brains is a blaze of astonishment at our own existence.
The object of the artistic and spiritual life is to dig for this sunrise of wonder." - G.K. Chesterton
